Introduction to Feng Shui: Fundamentals of Yin-Yang, Five Elements, and Bagua

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, historically known as "Kan Yu," is an ancient Chinese study focused on harmonizing human living environments with nature. The term "Feng Shui" originates from Guo Pu's Book of Burial from the Jin Dynasty: "Qi disperses when carried by the wind and stops when bounded by water. The ancients gathered it to prevent dispersion and guided it to ensure containment, hence the term Feng Shui."

Core Theories

Yin-Yang Theory

All things are divided into Yin and Yang: Yang represents movement, brightness, height, and heat; Yin represents stillness, darkness, lowliness, and cold. Good Feng Shui emphasizes the balance of Yin and Yang—a residence should not be too dark (excessive Yin) nor overly exposed (excessive Yang).

Five Elements Theory

The Five Elements—Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth—interact through generation and restriction cycles: - Generation Cycle: Wood generates Fire, Fire generates Earth, Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water, Water generates Wood. - Restriction Cycle: Wood restricts Earth, Earth restricts Water, Water restricts Fire, Fire restricts Metal, Metal restricts Wood.

Bagua and Directions

The Later Heaven Bagua corresponds to eight directions: - Kan (North) → Li (South) → Zhen (East) → Dui (West) - Qian (Northwest) → Xun (Southeast) → Kun (Southwest) → Gen (Northeast)

Common Sha Qi

  • Chuan Tang Sha: Direct alignment of the main door with a balcony, causing qi to flow straight through.
  • Lu Chong Sha: A road directly aimed at the main door.
  • Fan Guang Sha: Strong light reflections from glass curtain walls.
  • Tian Zhan Sha: A narrow gap between two tall buildings pointing directly at the residence.

Learning Path

  1. Foundation Stage (1-2 months): Memorize Taiji, Bagua, and the 24 Mountains and Directions.
  2. Beginner Stage (2-3 months): Study the Eight Mansions School and Xuan Kong Flying Stars School.
